If the debts are completely unrelated to your housing/rental history, you may be just fine. At the same time, if the landlord is wary of elevated credit risks, regardless of what the renter has been late on, you may be denied, especially if it's a popular unit. It would probably go to the more creditworthy applicant. Either way, you may have to explain yourself to the landlord, but shouldn't be entirely out of luck.
