Will having a bad credit score keep me from renting an apartment?

January 24th, 2012 by admin | Filed under Good Bad Credit Score.

I have two unpaid debts totally about 800 dollars. My credit score is in the 500-600 range. What does passing a credit check mean? Will I be able to rent an apartment and or room with this credit score?

It all depends on the Land lord … most of them check your references … but I don’t see a problem with you renting a room or even a small apartment … good luck

It depends what’s in your credit history and what the landlord’s risk appetite is. If the debts are completely unrelated to your housing/rental history, you may be just fine.

At the same time, if the landlord is wary of elevated credit risks, regardless of what the renter has been late on, you may be denied, especially if it’s a popular unit. It would probably go to the more creditworthy applicant.

Either way, you may have to explain yourself to the landlord, but shouldn’t be entirely out of luck.

Yes, it could prevent you from getting a place.

You should be fine unless the debt is for back rent. $800 is not that much to be worried about. As long as it shows you make payments on time and there are no warrants or collectors after you there should not be an issue.
